Hello Friend,

There is one exception to the general rule of minimizing abstractions and generalization in your PA school personal narrative, and that’s your closing paragraph. This is your big chance to make sweeping statements like

“I think my record proves that I have the skill, compassion,
and dedication needed to be a great Physician Assistant.”

If you can come up with something more original, that would be even better; but if you feel compelled to say that, then this is the place to do it.

So what’s the best use of the closing paragraph? Here it is in a nutshell:

Your final paragraph should summarize your vision and reaffirm your commitment.

•	Do you have a vision for the future of health care? Say it here.

•	How do you specifically see yourself fitting into that? Outline it here.

•	Is there one segment of society that you feel specifically drawn to serve (e.g., the underserved, the Hispanic or Asian communities)? Express your commitment here.

•	Do you have special skills, qualities, or experience that make you especially suited to your vision? Ideally, you should have already mentioned these earlier in the essay, but you can briefly (a couple of words or phrases) factor in one or two highlights here.

Notice that we’re still painting pictures here. The reason is that if the admissions committee can see you as a PA, you will be more likely to get an interview.

In addition, this section can be (but doesn’t have to be) used to repeat in general terms whatever you feel is most important (do not spend more than one or two sentences on this). And if you feel it strengthens your essay, you can make an abstract statement like the one above (“I think my record proves” …).

There’s no need to make your ending long, since it functions as a kind of punch line. But there is one thing that you should definitely do: end on a humanitarian note.

Do not end on a clinical or intellectual note, since it tends to give the impression that you might be better off in a less people-oriented career. Ideally, your last line should contain the following components:

Caring. Vision. Idealism. Humanity.

Helping you write the BEST Essay possible,

Future PA,

Very often, the best opening paragraphs for Physician Assistant admissions essays are those relating a personal story that made a significant impact on your life. You may have a lot to tell the admissions committee members about your accomplishments and aspirations, but don’t underestimate the importance of this personal touch. More than any other statement that you are likely to make in this essay, a well-told personal story has the ability to draw us in and capture our imaginations. In a few descriptive strokes, it tells us who you are as a person by letting us see and feel through your eyes and heart.

Think back on your life. Which patients have you cared for or observed that made an impact on your thoughts and feelings? Even if you don’t know or remember their names, the human interest factor inherent in these stories will help your audience to really visualize and believe in your desire to be a great Physician Assistant. What about family members or friends? Have the sufferings of someone close to you acted as a critical factor in your decision to become a Physician Assistant ? Describe some of what you observed and thought and felt.

Without this human element, your accomplishments and ambitions could easily devolve into a laundry list of goals and achievements that sounds the same as hundreds of other admissions statements. But with it, your statement comes alive with meaning and purpose, and we feel that you’ve had the courage to open your heart to us and show us your core.

The PA School Essay is one of the most important aspects of the application. Use this opportunity wisely and write to connect to your audience.

Helping You Get Into PA school,

Hello Future PA,

Here you are settling down to write your PA admissions essay. You have a lot to convey—your qualifications and special characteristics; your relevant experience and training; how you became interested in the PA profession; your caring and commitment; obstacles you’ve overcome and your growth as an individual; significant, relevant events in your life.

Here’s the hitch: you have to keep it at or under 5000 characters (sometimes even having to cram it into one page), and you have to make a lasting impression on the admissions officers, who are slogging through hundreds of similar essays.

Let’s take a moment to ask ourselves about the ultimate goal. It’s not really to write a great essay, or to get an interview, or even to get into the PA program, though those are all steps along the way.

The ultimate goal is to be a PA—something you presumably really care about, believe in, and have worked hard to achieve. The ideal essay will convey your conviction that you can accomplish and sustain all of these goals.

So with that in mind, pretend that you already have the interview, because—guess what?—this is your first interview of sorts. And now pretend that you’re speaking to someone who’s on your side, who believes in you and wants you to succeed—a friend, not a judge … someone who knows you and cares about you.

How would you approach that person? How would you talk to a good friend about these things?

Here are a few hints that, in fact, come naturally to most of us:

•	Keep it personal – Yes, there are certain requirements that everyone needs to fulfill, but you’re not a robot, and neither are the best PAs.

•	Keep it simple – Would you try to impress your close friend with unnecessarily fancy words? Would you normally speak that way? Probably not. Your goal would be to communicate clearly and effectively, so make that your goal here, too. After all, that is an important aspect of being a PA.

•	Keep it concrete – Avoid abstractions and generalizations. Also, you might know that you’re compassionate, committed, and qualified, but what proof do you have? Use plenty of detail, and make it interesting. You wouldn’t bore your friend, would you?

Remember those qualities and abilities you noticed in that PA who made such a great impression on you? What you admired in that PA is a reflection of you on some level—so let us know who you are through your thoughts, feelings, observations, words, and actions.
